depression during pregnancyFrom: mehs (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 29 Jun 2001 20:11:57 -0500 (CDT)
I had Hyperemisis during my first pregnancy. After almost two months of home health care, IV's, Reglan pump in leg and weight loss - I began feeling better. But that was short lived when I started feeling very depressed. I was a total nut case. I saw a Psychologist and when that didn't work I saw a Psychiatrist. When I had asked my OB if this was normal...He said "no", but that if I needed medication for the depression the Phychiatrist would know what to prescribe for me. huh?? I was shocked. I ended up getting over this spell of depression. And thankfully I didn't take any meds to do it. My question is.........Is this a lot like post-partum depression? But just the opposite? I mean......if a woman can become depressed when her hormone levels drop, then wouldn't it possible that I was depressed due to the influx of hormones and the Hyperemisis? To me it's the same reaction....in reverse. I honestly think if my doctor (whom I stopped going to) had assured me this could happen, I would not have felt so hopeless. And now....because my chances are so high of getting Hyperemisis with each pregnancy - I'm afraid of what the future might bring.
