Re: Nuchal fold thicknessFrom: SarahB (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Jun 2001 12:01:37 -0500 (CDT)
So very sorry to hear about the baby you lost. I hope things go better this time. I will be 39 at delivery so looked up information on nuchal fold thickness when I had my level 2 u/s at 13 weeks. If you go to http://www.DOGPILE.COM and enter NUCHAL FOLD DOWN there is alot of information on the statistics, risks, and reliability of this measurement. The first document stated a risk 18 times that for maternal age with a measurement of 4mm. I think your maternal age risk is about 1:200 to 1:250.... I saw a table somewhere... so your age risk is .5% and then adjusted based on the data in the document would be about 9%. I have seen several posts on this web site from women who had the same thing happen and their baby's did not end up having Down's SYndrome. There is also some controversy about the reliability of the measurement and it's ability to detect Down's. One thing I noticed is that the most reliable detection is done by the experienced specialists (perinatalogist) - they also have the best stats on amnio complication rates (lower). I really hope everything goes well for you and your baby - it looks like the odds are still in your favor.
