25% effaced at 32 weeks -- ?'s

Hi! I'm exactly 32 weeks pregnant with our second baby, and have been having lots of cramps and contractions, with one episode of spotting, for several weeks. I haven't been too concerned about it since I never dilated or effaced with my first son till I was already overdue, and I ended up being induced 11 days overdue because my contractions were doing little but distressing him. Anyway, I had my cervix checked today and was found to be 25% effaced, but not dilated at all. I did not think this was a problem since I'm already in my 8th month, but the doctor put me on Brethine every 4 hours till I reach 35 weeks to try to get my contractions under control. Here are my questions: first, is there really anything to be concerned about, since I'm only effaced and not dilated? My doctor is not too worried that I will go into full labor just yet, but he didn't want to take the chance, which I can understand. But I hate the Brethine already because it makes me sleepy and jittery at the same time. Will my body get used to it soon, or will I likely always feel that way as long as I take the stuff? Could I safely cut down on the Brethine if my contractions slow down?

And this is a silly question, but does all of this hopefully mean that I won't go so far overdue again this time? I mean, since my contractions are actually accomplishing something now, could I perhaps hope to deliver on time or a bit early, or is that too much to hope for? Thanks for all your help! :)
