echogenic focus--Should I do an amnio?From: abarz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 26 Jun 2001 18:11:35 -0500 (CDT)
At my 20-week u/s, an echogenic focus of the heart was noted. I was told that this finding is a "soft" marker of Down's syndrome. Because I'm 31 years old and my MSAFP was normal (it showed a risk of 1:1282 for DS), I was told that an amnio is not indicated. Here are my questions: 1. What percentage of low-risk women with an isolated finding of an echogenic focus actually have DS babies? 2. How does this finding affect my risk profile? 3. When is it too late to have an amnio? (I'm 22 weeks 2 days.) Thanks so much. I'm in a tailspin of worry and confusion.
