I just wanted to tell you I know how scared you are--I had a transfusion after my son was born and was terrified of the risks. It didn't make me sick-- they give you Benadryl (which helped me sleep through it) to keep you from having an allergic reaction and tylenol in case you develop a fever. I can't imagine you'd have to stay in the hospital very long. Depending on how much blood you need, it takes 2 hours for 1 pint to go in. I had to stay an extra day because they didn't get started until late. As you know, you can refuse ANYTHING you want, but there are risks. Out of curiosity, do you know what your hemoglobin/hematocrit levels are? I wish you luck. I cried for an hour when they told me I needed a transfusion, but I really believe it was worth it.

After long talks my doctor is totally convinced that I need a transfusion. He sent me to have my blood drawn again today and told me that if my numbers are where they have been I will need a transfusion but can wait until after the baby is delivered. If it is any lower I must have one now. However, I do not wish to expose my baby to any unnecessary risks if I don't have to. Can I refuse it? Or would that be unsafe to myself given the situation? Is this standard procedure for this? I know the risks involved but what are the side effects? Will I get sick, etc? How long of a hospital stay does it require? Sorry these are all questions I came up with AFTER my appointment (isn't that always the case) and don't go back for another week. My doctor isn't the easiest person to reach, given he is the only OBGYN
