Weight gain issues and conflicting opinions

I've had excessive weight gain (35-40lbs at 27wks). My OB referred me to a dietician.

When I called to schedule the appt, I asked what sort of diet I should follow until I met with her (low-fat, low-carb, just watch calories, etc.). She said I should NEVER be on a low-carb diet.

Our family doc has put my husband on a low-carb diet not just to manage weight but as a lifelong diet. All the docs in his practice follow this diet, and this is the diet they recommend to all their normally healthy patients. I'm concerned that I'm going to a dietician who directly opposes what our normal family doctor (whom I trust) believes in.

Also, my OB told me that as long as I was eating healthy and not overdoing the exercise, it was ok for me to lose a little weight (due to exercise and healthy diet, not "dieting" to lose weight). The dietician said I shouldn't lose weight at all, only try to slow down the weight gain.

I'm not sure whose advice to follow. Instinct tells me to trust my OB and family doc more than the dietician. Should I talk to my OB and/or my family doc and ask for a referral to someone else? (I don't want to chow down on high-fat foods, but I don't want to be put on a diet that has me load up on carbs and watch fat only).

I was a healthy 125 lbs pre-pregnancy and never had a problem with weight before. This is my 1st pregnancy, so I don't know if I'm just one of those people who tends to gain more or if it's something else.
