2 questions re. home preg test and miscarriage - conflicting information?From: Jan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 15 Jun 2001 09:20:01 -0500 (CDT)
I am 6.5 weeks since LMP. I tested positive for pregnancy a couple of weeks ago (urine and blood tests). I have had quite a lot of spotting for the past 5 days, but no clots. I know that that can be fine, or it can mean miscarriage, but today my breasts aren't very sore anymore either. I called my doctor's office to ask if I could come in for a heartbeat check, and the nurse said that wouldn't be conclusive until about 8 weeks. Question 1: How often can you detect it sooner? My first appointment is scheduled for about 7.5 weeks and I'm wondering, if we don't see a heartbeat, how long it will take before we know for sure if I've miscarried? Question 2: The nurse said in the meantime I could take a home pregnancy test and if it's positive then I'm still pregnant, I haven't miscarried. But I've seen postings here where the doctors say that you CAN still test positive, even for weeks following a miscarriage. I don't want to get a positive result, get my hopes up, and then find out I've missed. Would a home test be conclusive? Thank you for your time. You're all very very helpful.
