Ulcerative Proctits and 5-ASA or mesalamineFrom: Allison (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 1 Jun 2001 13:04:20 -0500 (CDT)
Around the 5th month of my preganacy I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctis and prescribed 5-asa suppositories for treatement. I was told by the rectal surgeon that they were safe to take during pregancy and confirmed with my OBGYN who told me to take them. I am now in my third trimester and am concerned about the effect of anti-inflamatories and prostoglandins on my pregnacy and my baby. I would like to know what the risks are of continuing to take the 5-asa suppositories on my pregnacy and baby but have been able to get any real answers. (therefore I am having a hard time evaluating the risk vs reward.) I have heard that if you take aspirin (which I understand the drug I am taking is similar to) then it can cause cardiac problems. Please advise.
