It depends on the anomaly and the skill of the ultrasonographer. The later, up to 28 weeks, the ultrasound is done the better it is at picking up anomalies. The earlier, down to 8 weeks that it is done, the better it is at dating. In our institution we usually do it at 16-18 weeks. This is a compromise. It is still fairly good at dating and is also fairly good at picking up anomalies.
