Can polyps cause bleeding even if they aren't disturbed?

I saw my OB on Tuesday May 29 for light vaginal bleeding. I am 23 weeks along and have had a polyp hanging from the OS of my cervix that is about the size of a marble since finding out I was pregnant. I haven't had sex for over 3 weeks and am wondering how the polyp could be bleeding if it hasn't been irritated at all? Also I've had a non odorous discharge with the bleeding. My OB mentioned putting a loop around the polyp so it would come off, so they could determine if the bleeding is coming from the polyp or cervix. Please give your opinions.
