Re: Question about a new family cat...

Jen - I just learned a bit about Toxo from the vet when I took our cat in a few months ago. He said they can do a test on the feces of the kitten to determine if the toxo is present. Cats apparently get this disease from eating mice that have it, so it is a risk if yours was outdoors (not sure if at that age they eat mice or not though?). Vet said if we kept the cat indoors and there were no mice around, Toxo should not be a concern. So if your kitten tests negative for it and is no longer allowed outside and you don't have any mice around, it *should* be okay.

I would still keep taking the precautions you have been and bring this up to your doctor as well as I'm not a professional and would hate to be passing on information contrary to your doc's opinion. In the mean time, maybe your mother could keep it at her house or your husband would agree to swap some other chore for the litter box just for the next 10 weeks? (for the sake of your and your baby's health?) I do know how subborn they can be though.

>Hello, I am 30 weeks pregnant and about a week ago my mother surprised my daughter (and me!) with a new kitten. This kitten was found as an abandoned out door kitten at about 5 weeks. We took the kitten in because it would just break my daughter's heart to say no. My husband will not help with the litter box at all because "he didn't want a cat in the first place" so it is left up to me. I wear gloves and then even wash my hands, I clean it out every day or every other day, and cover my nose and mouth while doing this. Am I safe against Toxo in doing all of this? I should also mention that I have lived on and off with cat's my whole life. Should I bring this up to my doctor or should I even be that concerned? This pregnancy comes after two miscarriages and I don't want anything to happen to this baby. Is this something I should really worry about? Thank you,
