Re: Breastfeeding and Pregnant

I am the original poster of the message. I must say that since I had my son 17 months ago I have read everything I could find about bf and also "talked" to bf'ing moms on the internet via e-mail lists and newsgroups. I feel that I am extremely well informed on this topic because of this. I posted the message to see what kind of advice I would get from a dr. regarding this subject. I know that many moms have quit bf because of poor advice from a dr. A lot of people trust a dr.s opinion and would never question it and would not do research on their own. A patient has to be her own advocate. Dr.'s are only human -- they don't know everything under the sun and they certainly aren't perfect. Unfortunately breastfeeding is not a subject that medical schools and residency programs seem to find important. Unless the dr. himself decides to learn about it on his own he really will be poorly informed.

This being said, I agree with Emma completely. Just because someone has MD behind their name doesn't mean they can't be wrong. Dr. Wang believed that his advice was correct -- I'm sure that's why he wrote it. Unfortunately it was terribly inaccurate. I have no intention of weaning. I was really shocked when he wrote a terse one sentence response to my post with no explanation whatsoever (until I asked for one.)

What I would love to see is for someone to learn from their mistakes. I would hope that if Dr. Wang sees all of these messages he would realize that he needs to better inform himself about breastfeeding. There's nothing wrong with that. Dr.'s cannot know everything -- but if they don't they should not give out bad advice. They should do some research and give a better informed opinion.

Also, I would hope that patients would not just take a dr.'s word for something. They should do their own research. Better safe than sorry.
