Re: Endometriosis and PregnancyFrom: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 May 2001 21:24:49 -0500 (CDT)
Lupron is called a GnRH Agonist. It inhibits the pituitary from secreting the hormones that stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone (FSH and LH). This essentially puts you into drug induced menopause. Since endometriosis is "fed" by estrogen, inducing menopause causes the implants to shrink. It is a powerful drug and causes similar side affects as those caused by menopause (I got hot flashes, had trouble sleeping, and felt pretty miserable). There are also other side affects... I developed joint pain and started testing moderately positive on the ANA blood test...that went away. Also, bone lose is a concern. Some doctors will give a minimal estrogen addback which helped me some for the side affects - and I still benefitted from the drug. I believe the normal course for endo treatment is 6 months. It seemed like a long time. It did not permanently get rid of my endo ... eventually it came back. I think this is something to discuss with a doctor who has alot of knowledge about the various treatments for endo and how much endo you have and your desire for pregnancy. I didn't decide to take it until I had had endo for 6 years and had had several surgeries and two babies.
