Can severe stress cause a miscarriage?From: CJ (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 May 2001 20:46:40 -0500 (CDT)
I am in need of some important information. Can severe stress, mentally physically (i.e., severe dehydration, diaharrea, vomiting) cause or have a good chance of playing a role in having a miscarriage? I was almost 2 months pregnant and got Shigella (food borne illness) and had this severe stress on my body. I was so mentally stressed and worried for my baby at the time, not knowing it was Shigella I had. I couldn't eat or drink anything for 2 weeks and I lost 10 pounds. I thought it was just the flu. How much of an impact does stress have on a pregnancy? I know my body and I know I have never ever been so sick in my life. Is there someone there who I could call or is there an expert in the field of stress and what it can do on your body or any books that I can read up on? I really feel that if it weren't for the severe symptoms I had from the Shigella, I would still have my baby. I have since given birth 2 months ago and had a normal pregnancy just like I did 6 years ago with my first child. Could you please respond ASAP. I need to find information on this quickly. Thanks so much for your help.
