Why is progesterone therapy considered controversial?From: Mary (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 14 May 2001 20:14:38 -0500 (CDT)
I have had 5 healthy pregnancies and 3 m/c's, 2 of which have occurred back-to-back in the past 6 months. With my last pg., which I m/c'd at 8 wks., one OB in my practice put me on Prometrium for a p4 level of 12.5 and spotting. My p4 level had risen to 90 when I was retested. Unfortunately, I lost the pg. My regular OB has said that progesterone therapy is "controversial" and has advised me against taking the meds with a p4 of 12.5 -- he said that level should be sufficient. I am skeptical after losing 2 pregnancies in a row. I'm not understanding what is so controversial about the therapy; could a physician please advise, as I am planning on trying again next cycle. Thank you so much.
