Re: blood serum test/ [aoFrom: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 14 May 2001 18:00:24 -0500 (CDT)
My third was a surprise since I had just come off a 6 month course of Lupron for endometriosis. Before I could have an xray of my pelvis, the doctor (rheumatologist) wanted to do a quantitative HCG just to be sure I wasn't pregnant - I was sure that I wasn't. The test came back "negative" but the nurse at this doctor's office thought it was strange that it was not 0 - the value was 4.9. I wondered the same thing and called my OB's nurse. She said that most labs consider anything less than 25 a negative but that my OB doctor usually considers it possibly an early pregnancy if it is 5 or more. The nurse suggested to wait 5 days and do a home test which is what I did (canceled my xray just to be sure). The home test was positive 5 days later. 9 months later Matthew was born.
