Re: . Possible Down syndromeFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 12 May 2001 11:16:19 -0500 (CDT)
Since I am going to be 41 years old when my baby is born [its due in December], my doctor sent me to a maternal-fetal specialist who is counseling me on all the "risks" of being an older mother. And of course, they want me to have an amnio. I looked my doctor in the eye, and I said, "Doctor, if I have a Down's syndrome baby, it won't be because of my age - it will happen because it's meant to be...God's will - because it is something that will provide me a wonderful lesson in life and will help me and my family grow. I refuse to have an amnio just to see if I have a Down's baby. If I had the test and found that the baby had D.S., what do you think I'd do? Kill it? Absolutely not - that baby has as much right to be born as any other, and I will give birth to him/her and raise that child to the best of my ability, and love him/her as much as any of my other children." I remember asking my husband what he would feel like if we had a Down's baby. He gave the sweetest answer I think there ever could be - he said, "I'd feel like a father." I know of many women who had amnio's who came out fine, but I also know of many others who didn't come out fine. They almost lost their babies, and there were complications. Yes, the risk is small, but it's still a risk. My dear friend had an amnio when she was nearly due [I can't even remember the doctor's reason for it, but I thought it was strange to do it so near the birth time]. Her baby was perfectly formed, full term and she lost all of her amniotic fluid and her perfect son was born DEAD. The doctors told her it was because of the amnio. She was devistated - it was her first child. She has had six other children since then, all of them at home. Anyway, if you are a person who doesn't plan on aborting a child because it has Downs or any other "defects", then I personally say that amnio is a big waste of time and money - which also brings on a needless risk and worry. This is just my personal opinion. Best wishes....
