This is done by using a very dilute solution of the anesthetic agent so that only the sensory protions of the nerves are blocked but the motor protions are not. This allows one to control the muscles (not very well) while every tthing is numb. There are not many anesthesilogists who will attempt it and aeven fewer who will be successful.

Depends on the level fo the nerve block. Even a regular epidural may not relieve this pain unless your OB and anesthesiologist work very closely together.

Same as a regular epidural PLUS it might not relieve pain as well.

All epidurals do have a risk of doing this.

A caudal epidural is more likely, but there are very few docs around who know how to do them anymore.
