Question re: Gestational Diabetes

Hi. I was recently dx. with GD. My last u/s was at 28 weeks I am now 31 1/2 weeks. My OB thinks tape measurement of my belly is sufficient enough to determine the size of the baby and if there is concern of excess amntioc fluid. I will not get another u/s until 36 weeks. I thought u/s were routine when you have gestational diabetes? Are tape measurements that accurate? How common is it to have a large baby? Thank you very much for this valuable board.
