I am 4 weeks pregnant (after my last period) and had HCG reading 10 days ago of 38 then two three days later it dropped to 33 (then I was told that I had misscarried and dealt with that), then three days later it went up to 73 and I was told that I was definately pregnant! Then today, three days later again, I went in again to makes sure it was progressing and it was 62!!! What is happnening to me!? I feel like I am on an emotional rollercoaster that wont let me off, my hopes go up and down constantly, first I am pregnant then not then pregnant then not again! Has anyone else had experiences where their HCG levels went up and down in the begginning? Please help! If the ObGyn could answer this I would really appreciate it! Thanks

The source of HCG is placental tissue and sometimes when the pregnancy is not "good", the placental tissue will continue to produce some HCG, making the testing somewhat confusing. This is why the "gold standard" is to measure the values 48 hours apart and if they do not double in that time, the pregnancy is likely not "good". Another issue here is that when the levels tend to plateau, one must keep the possibility of a tubal pregnancy in the back of one's mind. Most represent a miscarriage, but cannot forget about tubal... Lynn
