I had this same thing happen to me, at 35 weeks. It's very scary! A NST (non-stress test) is very safest, and completely non-invasive. All they do is hook you up to a fetal heart monitor (a belt around her stomach) and you push a button everytime you feel the baby move. They are looking to see if the heartrate increases with fetal movement, among other things. If the heartrate looks good, then baby is probably okay and placenta is working well.

So it seems like your doctor is concerned about something, and that he plans on keeping a close eye on you and the baby. This is a good thing, and with you being so close to you due date, even if the baby has to be born early, everything will most likely be okay. Most babies born at 38 weeks have no problems with their lungs.

Hang in there, you're almost done!!
