The problem is that you are not able to tell for sure at 17 weeks if the edge is beside the cervical os (low-lying placenta), over the edge just a bit (marginal placental previa) or fully across (placenta previa). Remember the cervical os is only 1cm across. This is really a spectrum, and later U/S should help to define where on that spectrum you fall.
