Plaquenil in pregnancy

I have SLE and had not had any problems with it until I became pregnant with my son who was born last September. During my pregnancy and since then, I have been on moderate to high doses of prednisone (between 15 and 40 mg). My MFM Doctors don't like to use Plaquenil in pregnancy, but everything I've read said that it is reasonably safe. I just started taking Plaquenil and would like to start thinking about trying for another baby in 6 months. As a MFM Dr. Montogomery, how do you feel about Plaquenil in pregnancy? I would really like to avoid prednisone or at least minimize it because I had GDM that was impossible to control without insulin, largely (I believe) because of the prednisone.

One more question, my MFM doctor told me that I needed to wait 2 years before trying to conceive again because my past pregnancy was so difficult--I think he's being a little extreme. Do you ever counsel your patients to wait that long before trying again?

Thank you for your insights.
