two vessel umbilical cord and one kidney smaller than other on babyFrom: A (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 12 Apr 2001 16:51:51 -0500 (CDT)
A recent ultrasound indicated a two vessel umbilical cord. I'm 32 years old, 21 weeks pregnant with my third child (the other two are in excellent health). The ultrasound also showed that the right kidney appears to be smaller than the left kidney (which is normal size). Everything else on the ultrasound was normal and no markers for Down's was found. Although we have no genetic chromosone problems, we opted for the amnio. Are the ultrasound markers a good indicator that the amnio will come back negative for Down's? Can a child develop and function with one smaller kidney? Thanks for any info on kidneys of different size!
