Variations in fetal heartrate

I have a doppler at home to listen to the babys heartbeat. I was listening today and the heartrate seemed to slow down then go back up I could feel and hear the baby move, I was wondering if variations in fetal heartrate are normal? and could I have been hearing the placenta at one point? (is the placenta flowing at a slower rate then the baby's?)
