Ultrasound to determine gender

When is the earliest in a pregnancy when an ultrasound will reliably predict gender? My OB/GYN office has a new high-resolution ultrasound machine, at 9 1/2 weeks we could clearly see what was what with the baby (I have seen some ultrasound pictures where I had no idea what anything was). If we want an ultrasound to determine gender, we have to pay for it ourselves, so I want to make sure we can have a good chance of being able to tell. When, in your opinion, is the best time to get this ultrasound?

Thank you!
