friable cervixFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 29 Mar 2001 15:31:00 -0600 (CST)
I am 13.4 weeks pregnant. I had a good ultrasound at 6.3 weeks after two weeks of light, brown spotting. We heard the heartbeat via doppler at 8 and 12.5 weeks. The pregnancy seems to be going fine. The bleeding was explained at my last doctor's visit to be caused by a very irritated, "friable" cervix (noticed during pap smear.) The pap smear caused bleeding and spotting for about a day and half. I was told that the probable cause (without having the pap smear results back) was hormonal and to expect some spotting throughout the pregnancy. My cervix was closed. My only concern is that a friable cervix may have some relation to an incompetent cervix. Is this so? If so, what should I look out for? By the way, I have always had normal pap smears (and on an annual basis). I use this board frequently and have found it enormously helpful. Thank you for your time.
