With indoor cats, I'm sure you're fine... my doctor told me I could scoop my cats' boxes (I have 5 indoor cats), since they have always been indoors... but I didn't tell my husband this... I prefer to let him scoop! :)

And you are definitely safe from the fumes... you have to actually touch the infected litter... and then transport it to your bloodstream (i.e., mouth, nose, etc.)...
