BJ, I am also very sorry for the loss of your sister. What a terrible tragedy. I survived an AFE during my labor on January 17, 2001. I was on pitocin, but my contractions never got very stong as I never dialated or was really in that much pain. Your sister's experience only reinforces to me what a miracle it is that I'm okay. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

For the doctors, could placental breakdown in a post-due pregnancy be a factor? I was 10 days past my due date, and there was thin meconium in my amniotic fluid. With the placenta being attached to the mother's circulatory system, it seems like AFE's could happen frequently. I wonder if there's some defect in my uterus that made this happen, and would make it more likely to happen if I ever had another baby. My very wonderful doctor says that if I have another baby, he'll do a C-section before I have a chance to go into labor, but if they happen in elective C-sections, I could never be guaranteed of being safe.

Thanks for your input, Amy
