got a question

I am 40 weeks pregnant, baby was due March 8. I lost my plug on March 3. I have been having contractions of varying strength but staying b/w 6-8 minutes apart since Wednesday evening (March 7). I woke up this am with a brownish tinged mucousy discharge that turned bright red throughout the day. I called the hospital and the on call doctor called me back and I went in to be checked. The doctor said that I was only dilated to 1.5 to 2 cm and that the discharge is normal and just meant that my cervix was thinning out. I was confused by this since everything that I have read and been told in pregnancy classes has been that bright red bleeding/spotting could be a symptom of a more severe problem and needs immediate medical attention. Since this is conflicting with what I was told at the hospital.....who is right and what is normal?
