Your doctor will see if your fetus is in distress or having an infection (that may lead to the premature rupture of the membranes). If everything is okay, then two basic management options remain. The first is conservative or expectant management, in which the patient is hospitalized for intensive surveillance for signs of fetal compromise or infection, at which time labor is allowed or induced if necessary. The second is immediate delivery (by induction drugs or C-section) for pregnancies beyond a certain gestational age (more than 32 weeks) or estimated fetal weight (more than 1,800 g).
