What exactly is Group B Strep?From: Mari (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 7 Mar 2001 21:53:43 -0600 (CST)
Dear Doctors, My pregnant friend's OB/Gyn recently informed her that she tested positive for Group B Strep. He also told her that when she goes to the hospital to deliver her baby, she should remind the staff that she tested positive for Group B Strep so they can provide her with an anti-biotic IV. Can you please explain exactly what it is she's got? I've read through the archives and I'm still unclear. The archives say that 30% of women just have this bacteria and that it's normal. In that case, why will she need anti-biotics during labor and delivery? 1-Is this something like Strep Throat? 2-Is this a recurring UTI? 3-Is this an STD? 4-Is this something she inherited from her mother? She has had one child already and there was no mention of Group B Strep during her first pregnancy. Thanks for your answers and advice.
