How is HPV diagnosed?

About 7 years ago I had a pap test that came back with dysplasia caused by what the lab thought was HPV. I went to a different GYN for a second opinion and for a colposcopy. When I had a colposcopy and biopsy done of one small inflamed area, it was determined that the lab test was wrong, there was no dysplasia present, and I had a case of cervicitis, which was monitored and cleared quickly. I have not had a bad pap since. Incidentally, the biopsy and cultures from the colposcopy was sent to a lab in NYC that is known for its accuracy.

I am curious then as to whether to take the diagnosis of HPV from the first lab seriously given the errors in their report. I have had two healthy children since then and am pregnant with my third. I certainly don't want to put this child or my husband at risk. Is there a blood test or culture test that can determine the presence of HPV? I asked my GYN at the time I had the colposcopy about HPV testing and was told then it was notoriously unreliable and not worth it. Has the testing improved in the past 6 years?

Thanks.
