1st child large & hypoglycemic: 2d PG Test Early for Gest. Diabetes?From: Julie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Feb 2001 16:29:38 -0600 (CST)
HISTORY: I am 5'4" tall, of Hawaiian, Philipino, German, Irish descent. Family history is unknown; I'm adopted. I had my first child at 32 years old. I exercised throughout my pregnancy and followed a healthy diet. Pre-pregnancy weight: 126. Although I took the 1 hour glucose test in that pregancy, the lab lost the results and I was not notified of that fact until my 36th week. By week 36 I had gained 40 pounds. From the 36th to the 38th week, I gained 10 pounds, without an increase in food consumption. C-Section performed at 38 weeks. My baby was 9.9 pounds and hypoglycemic. He spent 1 week in NICU to stabilize his blood sugar level. CURRENT FACTS: I am now 6 weeks pregnant. 36 years old. Pre-pregnancy weight 125 pounds. I am very active (run, weights, step aerobic, etc. at least 5 days a week), with a very healthy diet. Qs: (1) Although there was never any definite diagnosis in my prior pregnancy, what is the likelihood that I had Gestational Diabetes? (2) Since I am at a greater risk now (over 35, prior large baby), should I be tested for GD early? Or does GD only begin to develop later in pregnancy? Your help is greatly appreciated. Julie
