At 17 weeks' gestation, evidence of placental tissue covering the cervical os will be found in 5% - 15% of all patients. However, more than 90% of these will resolve by term. Total placenta previa diagnosed in the second trimester will persist into the third trimester in only 26% of cases. Therefore, patients should be followed up with serial sonography in the last trimester to determine whether the previa persists to term.
