Taking Provera to slow or stop menstrual period

After having a test done to determine if I was able to conceive (inserting dye into my fallopian tubes to check for scar tissue) it was determined that my right tube is totally blocked with scar tissue except for the very end by the ovary and my left tube is clear except for the end by the ovary, which is heavily scarred. Especially since that test was done, my periods have been considerably heavier with a lot of clotting. I recently asked my doctor if there was any way to stop my periods since I don't really need them. I also asked her this because I get cramps in my back, which makes it hard to determine if the pain I am feeling is actually a reacurrence of back problems (3 back surgeries in 3 years) or if it is the cramps from the period. She prescribed Provera. Take it days 11-25 of cycle. I have read up on Provera but still don't understand its purpose. Is it supposed to stop, start a period, or increase fertility? Is there any other way of stopping my periods? I am 32 and never been pregnant. I have had STD's which caused the scar tissue. Also, any ideas on other ways of possible fertility without surgery? Any help or response would be appreciated.
