Re: CIRCUMCISION...how safe and painless are they?From: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 30 Jan 2001 21:59:21 -0600 (CST)
Here in Australia, the minority of male babies are circumcised as it is not a necessary procedure, but one that is done "so they look like their Dad". They will however, look different to all the boys at school(..which is worse?) If it is 'required' for religious reasons, then a suitably qualified (in religious regards) paediatrician will do the operation before discharge. If parents wish it to be done for other reasons, then parents are encouraged to wait until 12 months for it to be done under general anasethetic. In our antnatal classes, we were told that most midwives hate holding down a baby while their skin is cut off and so refuse to participate in them which is why there is such a move away from it. There are some doctors who are happy to do them for anyone for any reason, but they're not in this state. I have to agree with Anna, the foreskin wouldn't be there if it didn't serve a purpose. I wouldn't circumcise my girls so I certainly wouldn't circumcise my boys...
