in reply to 'Heartbeat and home doppler'From: Vanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 26 Jan 2001 18:44:09 -0600 (CST)
Dear Questioning about heartbeat and home doppler, I am not a medical doctor or nurse, but I thought I should share with you my experiences with listening to the heartbeat with a doppler at home. I rented a professional doppler from babybeat.com when I was 9 weeks. The doppler turned out to be the exact same model my obgyn uses. I was trying it out almost every day, but could only hear my heartbeat and blood flow for the first 10 days (as expected). However, when I was 10 and 1/2 weeks I was able to pick up the baby's heartbeat and have been able to pick it up almost every time since then. I am sharing this with you for two reasons. One is to say that every pregnancy is different and with some you may indeed be able to hear the hb earlier that the cannonical 12 weeks. Secondly, to say that using a doppler at home can be very helpful and reassuring especially if one (like myself) has experienced miscarriage in the past. So, don't let anyone (including doctors) discourage you, ultimately it is your pregnancy and you know best what is helpful and right in your case. And don't worry to much about the symptoms subsiding---that can often happen as you approach your second trimester. My very best wishes to you, -V.
