BP Meds for PIH???

Why do some people get medications like aldomet or labetol when they have PIH/Pre-Eclampsia? I had PIH w/ my last pregnancy (onset ~33wks) and was induced at 34w5d. Unfortunately this pregnancy it started at 22w4d with a BP of 150/90, trace protein and edema. So far I am doing total bedrest and my BPs are averaging 120/80 (BP between 6wks-20wks 90/60). I have been having the constant headaches and right side cramps. My friend (yah, I know, good source!) said that the headaches are symptoms of high blood pressure???

I am wondering, do they wait until later to start blood pressure medicines because they are not effective for very long? Or do I need to have a sustained bp >140/90? Or is the criterion for prescribing bp meds the same as determining PIH? (i.e. the increase of 30/15) I also am IDGDM since 9 wks, for what that's worth.

Thanks (as always!!!) Alison R. 24w4d

P.S. I guess I was in that 30%+ that Dr. McIntosh quoted for recurrance of this nasty disease, in spite of my nearly 70% chance of not getting it :*(
