How accurate is the Ovulation predictor kit?

I am on Day 17 of my usual 31day cycle so means i should be ovulating today. My BBT showed a surge yesterday but the ovulation predictor kit was negative (DAY16) and only positive today (Day 17). My cervical mucus was thick murky and slightly yellowish yesterday and turn eggwhitish today. I thought the BBT will only show a surge after ovulation? Doesn't the kit give you about 24hrs warning before ovulation starts?? The different tests are confusing me. The BBT menthod would show i ovulated before DAY 16 while the OPK shows DAY 18 and 19???

How am i going to plan if i am looking to try for a girl?? Last day to try on would be which day??? Thanks ade
