14 Week Miscarriage - DESPERATE for answers!From: Monika (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 9 Jan 2001 18:53:29 -0600 (CST)
I am 36 years old, non-smoker non drinker and I conceived on September 4th, 2000 on my third cycle of Clomid. I have no Thyroid due to Thyroid Cancer and I take 200mcg of Synthroid per day. While on Vacation in Mexico during my 12th week of pregnancy, I started to bleed heavily (although without any accompanying pain). The Resort's on call doctor arrived and took us into town to the hospital where they gave me an Ultrasound and promptly informed me that I was 14 weeks Pregnant. They said I had a 10% separation of the Placenta from the Uterus and a 1.5cm Hematoma between the two. They also said that I had an inflamed right kidney. The baby appeared to be fine, lots of movement and good heartbeat They ordered me to bed rest and gave me antibiotics by IV. The next day's US showed that the Hematoma had grown to 2.5 cm but again the baby was fine. My Husband got in touch with my OBGYN in Canada who told him to get me home as soon as possible. After signing various release forms, (that warned I could bleed to death if I traveled) they let me check out of the hospital and late that evening we returned to the resort. The following morning I bled out a large clot and after that, the bleeding slowly subsided to just brown sticky spotting. Upon our arrival at home, I phoned my OBGYN office only to be told by his receptionist that he was not available and that she had no instructions from him to me. (My Husband did not speak to the Doc from Mexico either, only his receptionist.) We then made the decision to go and check into the hospital. After 9 hours of waiting, the hospital's US showed that I was in fact only 13 weeks, no sign of Placental Abruption, Hematoma and lots of movement from the baby with good heart rate. The OBGYN on call just glanced at the Mexican Ultrasounds and pronounced that their equipment was very primitive and he could not see what they had diagnosed. He explained that the right Kidney inflammation was common during Pregnancy and they did find a small Fibroid (1.5cm) in my Uterus. He then sent me home to carry on as before. For the next week, I did not speak with my OBGYN once. (Not due to my lack of trying!) Exactly 7 days later, I was rushed to the same hospital with horrible pains every 2 minutes. It turned out that I had miscarried (I was told that I was having contractions) and I had to have an immediate D&C. That was on December 11, 2000. I had since gone to see my GP because much to my horror, my OBGYN did not even know what had happened - I had to relay that I miscarried to his receptionist. My GP read me the report from the hospital that said it was a male fetus, 8.5 cm and the report noted that the fetus had been dead for at least 7 days. He then referred me to another OBGYN (at my request). Today I still do not know exactly what happened. My appointment with the new OBGYN is not until February 1, 2001 and I just can't continue to wait for an explanation. I would appreciate any thoughts, comments or experiences that anyone cares to share. One final question. I think that I may have started my period on January 5. I had not been bleeding or spotting from the D&C since December 28. The trouble is that I have only been spotting dark brown not the usual red of my regular period. If this can be considered my period, would the first day of my cycle be considered Jan 5 or do I count today when the spotting is considerably heavier. I would like to know as I have 2 months worth of Clomid dosage leftover from before I became pregnant that I would like to take right away.
