Lauren, First, you can start trying as soon as the bleeding stops. There is an increase rate of conception in the 3 months following a loss. It is likely, by the odds that the two losses are unrelated and you are not at a big risk of another, but your physician is right in discussing some testing after loosing two pregnancies to miscarriage...
