Another Fifth's Disease questionFrom: Jennifer (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 31 Dec 2000 18:02:16 -0600 (CST)
I have contracted Fifth's disease and was in my 18th week. I got a reply that said 12% of babies die when this is contracted in the second trimester. I had an u/s about 2 weeks after contracting it and nothing overt was seen. We have another one schedule in 8 days. I am 21 weeks now. I do have a couple of more questions... If you know that you have contracted the fifth's disease and are doing serial u/s is the baby less likely to die of the anemia if it develops it? I would think that maybe the ones that die are the cases where the Fifth's goes undetected. How succesful is the transfusion if that is necessary? How long does it take for the anemia to show up in the baby? Thanks in advance!
