Re: Miscarriage by speculum? Need answer ASAP!From: Anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Dec 2000 13:43:35 -0600 (CST)
Keeta the speculum does not go inside the cervix. The speculum only goes into the vagina to make it easier to view the cervix. A fetus is well protected by amniotic fluid sac and a speculum would not touch the fetus. A cervix is about 3-4 centimeters long and the speculum is far away from any fetus. A pap smear as well does not injure a fetus. I had an endometrial biopsy that requires going inside past the cervix to the uterus and takes a sample of tissue inside the uterus (I had this done very early in pregnancy like 4-5 weeks). No injury even going that far occured to my baby. Take care
