Re: Why isn't NST a standard test for all?From: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 12 Dec 2000 10:29:19 -0500
Tests are only as good as our abilities to interpret them. The NST is based upon the concept that the fetus matures at a certian rate with regard to the development of central nervous system control over the heart rate. This is not true for EVERY fetus. Therefore, the test is not a great test and requires additional testing when it is abnormal. However, in the case of a fetus already at risk for placental probelms: that is diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. then the false positives are worth it. In a normal population you would be screaming loudly about how the test scared you into having numerous other unnecessary tests. Selman I. Welt, M.D. Shreveport, LA -- Original Message --
