Nursing and medicationFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 15 Nov 2000 14:47:18 -0600 (CST)
The day after I was released from the hospital after having my son, I developed Pyleonephritis and went back in the hospital for another week to be on I.V. gentamyacin & Kefsol. I now have another kidney infection that is antibiotic resistant to the medicines I took while I was in the hospital and only resistant to Cipro which is not safe to take while I'm nursing. My doctors have recommended that I stop nursing and pump to maintain my milk supply, but when I pump I can only get 1-2 oz per pumping and my baby has a very hard time with formula. My question--how can I be sure that I'm emptying my breasts when pumping and is there anything else I can to be sure I maintain my milk supply while I'm taking the medicine? My other question: What happens if I don't treat this infection? Will it go away on its own? I realize this is the "Pregnancy Forum," but I'm really hoping someone can help me with my nursing problem. Thank you in advance
