mentrual problems after miscarriage

I am 36 yrs. old with three children, all normal, uncomplicated pregnancies, youngest child is now 10. In June, I found out I was pregnant - had been on the pill for the last 9 1/2 years and then off for a month (was out of town and ran out of pills- waiting to resume the next month) Due to having to see a new doctor, I was unable to see him until July 5, then was scheduled to have an ultrasound on July 13th to try to pinpoint a due date. Results of that ultrasound showed no heartbeat and that the baby had stopped growing at about 7 1/2 weeks (approx. 5 wks prior to appointment). I started bleeding a few days after that and decided to not have a D&C done. Kept going for blood level tests which steadily went down. On Sept 5, went back to the doctor for a recheck and after a vaginal exam, he said everything looked OK - I still had not had a period and was told that was normal and probably would have one shortly. Sept 24th , I thought had gotten my period, but it was only one day of kind of heavy discharge for me, then nothing. Then, the next week I had some brownish discharge for a few days, nthing to speak of, just noticed it when I went to the bathroom. Then a couple of weeks later, I started some bleeding for a couple of days, then a couple days of nothing, then have continued with this. I spoke to the nurse after this went on a couple of weeks and asked if I should try to go back on the pill to try and straighten my period back out, but she said it would be best to wait until I was sure I was having a period, do a pregnancy test, and then I could go back on the pill. I'm still doing this bleeding thing off and on, have noticed it follows after sex, or lots of physical activity, such as a day of lots of walking, etc. I'm getting tired of this and my body just kind of aches. esp. lower back. Any ideas whatmight be going on??? Sorry so long, but would appreciate any help.
