'Sick People' and newbornsFrom: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 8 Nov 2000 20:06:37 -0600 (CST)
I probably really know the answer to this already in my newly developing maternal gut instinct but I would like some input if possible. My sister's husband has had first the flu and now pneumonia in the past two weeks. Now he is finally getting over it all but meanwhile my sister and her three children ranging from 4 to 15 have been exposed to these illnesses. I expressed concern to my sister (who is a nurse by the way) about close contact or having them come over now that I am due (any day) and certainly when I have the baby. I know they are all going to be anxious to see it but I am concerned that I could be putting the baby at risk knowing that they have all been exposed and one person in the family has been ill although on antibiotics. She thinks I am overeacting when I say that I will have to clear visits with the OB and with the pediatrician because she is doubtful any one has anything but I don't know how long someone can be exposed to an active virus before they can show symptoms or when the risk becomes minimal. She thinks I am being silly and I think I am worried enough about the baby being healthy at birth much less worrying about illness the first few weeks of life. Any thoughts, recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
