use of brethine or tertubaline for irritable uterus

What is the standard opinion about treating irritable uterus (i.e., frequent contractions -- more than 4 per hour -- but no dilation of cervix) with brethine or terbutaline? I have two friends who were put on terbutaline for frequent BHs and both carried their babies until 35 weeks. I have another friend who was NOT put on drugs and delivered at 27 weeks. Is there any research?
