Low AFP correlation to other prenatal health issues?

I am 17 weeks pregnant at age 31. I recieved a low AFP test result stating I am high risk for having a Downs Child, 1:31 is the ratio. I am still waiting on the Amnio results. My question is has low AFP been linked to other health problems of the fetus? It would seem that there is a problem or the AFP would not be so low. Also are there anyother test to help determine if such problems exist?

Thank you so much for your time in answering these questions. I have made my self sick with worry.
